The Sweetest Treats of Summer: Blackberries in Season

Hello, summer lovers! July, August, and September are always hot and humid, but they also mean one thing: blackberries in season! On Kent Island and in most corners of the East Coast, these fruit delicacies grow wild and abundantly. It's a season worth cherishing, as long as you know what to expect. Join me in exploring the wonders of summer berries, from blackberries to blueberries and everything in between, because berries, are our jam.

Summer blackberries are perhaps the most sought-after of all the berry varieties, and it's easy to see why. Their delicate sweetness and slightly tart tang make them an excellent choice for everything from pies and tarts to jams and jellies. When in season, blackberries grow wild and are easy to pick, which makes them an ideal choice for berry-picking excursions with the family. Nothing beats the joy of watching your kids pick berries while laughing and playing in the sunshine.

But the goodness of summer berries goes beyond just taste and fun. Blackberries are packed with antioxidants and other nutrients that make them incredibly healthy and good for the skin. They are also low in calories and high in fiber, making them an excellent choice for anyone looking to eat healthily. Berries are proven to help prevent chronic diseases such as diabetes, obesity, and heart disease.

If your family loves to go berry picking, then consider organizing a community berry-picking day. This is an excellent way to get everyone involved and to have fun as a community. You can also use freshly picked berries to make homemade jams and jellies and share them with your neighbors and friends. By doing so, you will be promoting community bonding and healthy eating in one go!

Summer berries also come in many varieties, from blueberries to raspberries, and each variety offers a unique taste and flavor. Blueberries are sweet and juicy and are perfect in muffins and pies. Raspberries are tangy and go well in smoothies and salads. Strawberries are perfect for adding color and flavor to everything from cakes to cocktails. If you want to expand your berry horizons, then consider trying some exotic varieties such as goji berries, elderberries, and acai berries.

When the plants come into bloom in late spring and early summer, the bees go crazy.

Blackberries and raspberries create masses of little white flowers that fill the air with a dusky sweetness. It's one of my favorite parts of summer. Combined with the honeysuckle and wildflowers that grow along the forest, it's a magical experience.

At Bee Inspired, one of our best selling raw honey is Blackberry Honey! Remember, none of our honey is flavored; the flavor differs simply because of what the bees pollinate - in this case, blackberry bushes. The varietal honey comes from the Pacific Northwest and has a uniquely sweet and subtle fruity flavor. We love adding this honey to baked goods or drizzling into tea.

Summer blackberries are one of the most delightful things about summer. They are not only delicious and fun to pick, but they are also incredibly healthy and vital for our wellbeing. By incorporating berries into our diets and encouraging community berry-picking activities, we can promote good health and build strong community bonds. So, next time you go to the farmer's market or pick berries with your family, remember to cherish the moment and savor the sweet taste of summertime.
