How to Make a Moscow Mule
You will need a handful of ingredients: vodka, lime juice, gingerbeer, our honey, limes, fresh ginger, lavender, and mint
- Fill a cocktail shaker with ice
- Pour in vodka, lime juice, and honey syrup
- Shake vigorously then strain into a Moscow Mule mug with fresh ice
- Top with Ginger Beer.
- Garnish with a lime and fresh lavender and mint
Do you know what Ginger Beer is?
Ginger beer is non-alcoholic and it is definitely not the same as ginger ale. I have to admit that is what I assumed. Ginger beer is brewed and fermented, think of it as a spicy gingery soft drink that is not of boozy nature.
Garnish your mule with a wedge of lime and sprigs of fresh lavender and mint. If you feel like adding to the flavor, muddle the mint leaves and lavender flower buds into the cocktail for a truly refreshing cocktail.
Why do we use a copper mug?
The Moscow Mule was born in 1941, and its origins are somewhat murky. According to an article from 2007, in the Wall Street Journal by Eric Felton, (shared by our friends at liquor.com) the Cock ‘n’ Bull’s head bartender Wes Price laid claim to the recipe.
Apparently, at a later time, a bartender in LA ordered far too much ginger beer for his bar and had difficulty selling it. This same bartender’s girlfriend owned a company that made copper products, so the copper Moscow Mule mugs were relatively easy to come by for him.
If you don’t have a copper mug, any beautiful highball glass you have will suffice. We happened to have two different styles of copper mugs for our shoot. Don’t they look like a perfect hot summer day drink?
Play with your Honey Moscow Mule Recipe
It wouldn’t be a Waxing Kara recipe if we didn’t challenge those ingredients a bit, so in our take, you guessed it, we’ve added honey and made it a little more interesting.
- Try lemon juice in place of the lime juice
- Garnish with fresh-picked mint from the garden
- Top with fresh ginger slices
