Enjoy this Honey Fig Smoothie at the perfect moment, when figs come into season and the very same moment honey is being harvested. Figs are my very favorite fruit. My husband and I planted a fig tree here on Chesterhaven Beach Farm about five years ago from a graft that my friend Joyce grafted from one of her most prolific fig trees. Today our tree stands taller than I, and it’s a pleasure to witness nature at her finest.
Interesting factoid. Honeybees do not pollinate figs. Wasps do. And the story is fascinating.

We have good years for figs and not-so-great years for figs on the eastern shore. If we have a brutal winter, the fig tree usually doesn’t give much fruit the following summer. As you would expect, if we are graced with a mild winter, figs are abundant. We are having an amazing fig year this year! There are hundreds, if not thousands of figs on our beautiful tree.
At the hight of fig season, I am always exploring new recipes besides this fresh fig smoothie to make with them, like honey pepper fresh figs or goat cheese fig crostini. Figs are a versatile fruit, filled with great natural flavors and sweeteners, perfect for a lot of dishes and desserts.
Adapting our Honey Fig Smoothie
This high fiber smoothie is perfect as an on-the-go breakfast. You know, a recipe is not truly perfect until you’ve added your own touch to it. That’s why we encourage you to play with your food. Call to your inner smoothie maker to come out and play and change up this recipe. Here are some ideas:
- Add a half of avocado
- Replace the almond milk with coconut water
- Add spinach or another leafy green for added nutrients
- Add your favorite nut butter
- Garnish with cocoa nibs, hemp hearts or flax seeds

Honey Fig Smoothie
- 2 c almond milk
- 1 c ice
- 1 banana peeled
- 4 fresh figs
- 2 dates softened in hot water
- 1 tbsp. Waxing Kara Honey
- 1/2 tsp. cinnamon
- 1/4 tsp. vanilla extract
Place all of the ingredients in the blender
Blend until smooth, about one minute
Pour into a glass
garnish with cocoa nibs, hemp hearts or flax seeds
