A not-so-traditional approach to a Dairy-Free Eggnog is in order for the holiday season. Eggnog is one of the most festive and traditional drinks this time of the year. It’s thick, indulgent, and quite odd (if you think about it). I mean, it is a drink made from milk and eggs, which is pretty weird if you ask me, considering all the “healthier” holiday party cocktails today.

Traditional Eggnog is heavy and full of fat if made traditionally. We swapped out the dairy for almond and coconut milk. We also replaced refined sugar with Eastern Shore Honey. Eggnog made with honey and plant milk is just as sweet and rich as the traditional drink, but lighter in calories and not as rough on your stomach.

We need to make note that eggnog made with raw eggs can pose a health risk-if the eggs you are using are not fresh and clean, salmonella can potentially be transmitted. Although, to be fair, only eggs with dirty shells pose a risk of transmitting bacteria (the inside of an egg should be sterile unless cracked or punctured somehow).

If you feel safer drinking a pasteurized eggnog, you can heat up the liquids and gently blend the egg yolks into the mixture over medium heat, for around 20 minutes. You can use a food thermometer to test and see the temperature of the liquid-it should reach 160 degrees Fahrenheit. Make sure you don’t heat it up to boiling, because that will ruin the concoction.

This can also be made without the bourbon for a drink that is family-friendly.

Adapting this Dairy-Free Eggnog made with Honey

Any recipe does not reach true perfection until you’ve added your own touch to it. At Waxing Kara Honey House, we encourage you to play with your food. Change up this recipe. Here are some ideas to consider when you are making:

  • Use whatever type of milk you like-plant or dairy-based
  • Try using darker honey for a stronger flavor (try Avocado or Buckwheat)
  • Serve with a whole cinnamon stick for festive flare-or, use a candy cane!

Dairy Free Eggnog made with Eastern Shore Honey

  • 5 eggs separated
  • 2 tbsp. Waxing Kara Honey
  • 1 1/2 c plant based milk
  • 1 c coconut milk canned
  • 1 tsp. vanilla extract
  • 1/3 c bourbon
  • 1/2 tsp. cinnamon or nutmeg


  • Separate the eggs, and keep both the yolks and the whites. 
  • Whisk together the yolks with the honey until they have a thick texture (but don’t form peaks).
  • Blend the plant milk into the yolk mixture, and continue to whisk. Once combined, blend in the coconut milk and the vanilla extract. Mix together until creamy.
  • Using stand mixer or a whisk, beat the egg whites until they form stiff peaks. Gently fold these into the yolk mixture until well blended.
  • Seal in air-tight container and chill in the refrigerator.
  • When ready to serve, pour bourbon into a chilled glass, add eggnog, stir and top with a dusting of cinnamon or nutmeg.

For Cooked Eggnog

  • Separate the yolks and whites from the eggs.
  • Blend together the yolks and honey as above.
  • Blend together the almond milk, coconut milk, vanilla, and honey into a medium saucepan and gently heat until bubbling, stirring constantly. Add the yolk blend to the mixture.
  • Mix the yolk and milk blend thoroughly. Heat gently until thick (around 20 minutes). Make sure you stir constantly as to not burn any of the liquid.
  • Remove from heat, store in air-tight container and chill in the refrigerator.
  • When ready to serve, pour bourbon into a chilled glass, add eggnog, stir and top with a dusting of cinnamon or nutmeg.
