Everyone who comes into our Honey House always asks us, “can you eat honeycomb?” We explain that raw honeycomb is a mysterious gift from the bees: sliced right from the frames of a hive, these sweet little blocks give us honey in its purest form. Still encapsulated within its wax shell, this honey has been completely unaltered by humans. If you want a truly unique honey tasting experience, eating honeycomb is the way to go.
In answer to the question, yes, you may eat honeycomb.
Eating Honeycomb is perfectly safe!
We don’t recommend scarfing down a whole block, of course, but having a chunk on your toast or over oatmeal is perfectly delicious. Fresh made Beeswax from the hive, is soft and chewable. Raw honeycomb by itself is almost like gum. In fact, lots of our older customers tell us that they used to chew honeycomb right from their own grandparent’s hives when they were children.
How long does honeycomb last?
Honey and honeycomb are the perfect treats with an indefinite shelflife. If you want to store the comb in between uses long-term, store it in your freezer. When you want to use it again, take it out of the freezer and allow to thaw for a day or so.
Honeycomb Nutrition Facts
Eating honeycomb is healthy-ish. You can expect the same nutrition benefits to honeycomb as you do with honey. Athletes use honey for energy before workouts. Raw honey has been proven to aid allergies, also. If you are concerned about calories and carbohydrates, each ounce of honeycomb contains 115 calories, 27 grams of carbohydrates, 27 grams of sugar and 1.5 grams of protein.

Where Does Honeycomb Come From?
Our honeycomb is responsibly harvested by a beekeeper in Northern Pennsylvania. Normally, with a limited number of hives, beekeepers preserve the comb after harvest so that the bees have an easier time producing honey next season. However, our beekeeper keeps a large number of hives, many of which he designates for fresh virgin wax for use in comb packaging. Because he specializes in this art form, taking some comb doesn’t impact the bee’s ability to make honey.
How is honeycomb made?
The honeybee has a gland that secretes wax. Bees are very good housekeepers, and it is their instinct to pull the secreted wax off of each other to keep their hives clean and orderly. As they collect the wax, they create and build hexagonal shapes, perfectly. Honeycombs are made by honeybees with beeswax. Then they chew the wax with a bit of honey and pollen to produce the beeswax. The hexagonal cells serve as storage vessels for honey and provide homes for the queen to lay her eggs and hatch young bees.
To enjoy eating honeycomb by itself, simply cut off a wedge from the comb with a spoon and enjoy it like a candy. You can chew the wax as a gum before spitting it out, or in any other number of ways.
Eating Honeycomb is a rare Treat
You can eat honeycomb in a variety of ways, and different types of comb work better with different foods. The flora that surrounds the hive determines the color and the flavor of the wax and the honey. Brand new wax is always very bright creamy white.
Depending on the color of the honey inside the comb, the flavor of the honey and the wax will taste different: darker honey is earthier, lighter honey is sweeter but can also be strong. Dark honeycomb is delicious with breakfast bread and baked goods. Lighter honeycomb pairs well with cheeses, fruits, and meats on a charcuterie board.
Ways of eating honeycomb
- Drop a chunk in your hot tea. The wax and honey melt into the tea and I believe that this combination helps with allergies.
- Another super-easy way to use comb is to spread it over baked goods. Just cut off a chunk, and use a butter knife to smear it into crusty toast or warm bread. Fresh pumpkin muffins with a little honeycomb? Delicious! Fluffy, toasted bread with a bit of fresh comb? Absolutely divine.
- Another amazing way to eat honeycomb is by dropping a chunk or two overtop of your oatmeal. It works beautifully on granola as well! Darker honeycomb will give you a rich molasses-y flavor. If you want sweeter, floral honey, go for something that is lighter in color.
- Try using honeycomb on a cheese platter or with a simple chunky salad. Paired with something more acidic and salty, like bleu or feta, honeycomb is incredible. The sweetness plays off of the sharpness of these cheeses so well-you’ll be addicted.
Pairing Honeycomb with fruit is simple and good.
We like to use it with apples and pears. Speaking of pears, dropping a chunk of honeycomb over top of our Caramelized Pears would really make the dessert special!
How to Store Honeycomb
We sell our honeycomb in plastic cases that are air-tight. We still recommend storing them (for short term storage) in a plastic bag after opening. It’s honey. It’s going to make a little mess, and that mess will be worth every minute! We recommend long term storage in the freezer. Pull it out the day before you plan on using it and allow it to thaw. It may crystallize over time, but I personally think that adds to the texture.
